o Dede – Dede is also very worried, practical, and reasonable. Dede thinks about her future and the consequences that may occur. For example, when her sisters asked her to join in the underground movement Dede was hesitant and nervous about what would happen if she joined. She is the one sister who survived because of her hesitance to go with her sisters.
o Patria – Patria was very religious and when she was younger wanted to become a nun. When her son was taken away she prayed constantly to god to ask him to release her son. She was also very friendly and simple.
o Minerva – Minerva always wanted to be a lawyer. She is intelligent, brave, and outspoken. These qualities provoke her to speak out against the government. She is very rebellious and is a leader in the underground movement and isn’t afraid to stand up to people .
o Maria Teresa – Maria Teresa was the youngest of the sisters. She is very intelligent. While she is prison she struggles with hope. While in prison Maria keeps a journal where she expresses her feelings and talks/explains everything going on in prison. She has breakdowns and cries because of the toll that prison takes on her. She misses her family while she is in jail. She idolizes Minerva.
o Mama - She is also worried about what will happen to her daughters.
o Father – The Mirabal sisters father had an affair with another women and had other daughters. He likes to joke but drinks a lot. He does not want to cause conflict with Trujillo and the government.
o Rafael Leonidas Trujillo – He was the president/dictator. He is responsible for the death of many people. He was harsh and liked things to be done the way he wanted them to be done. He was shorter in stature. He had many affairs with different women.
o Santiclo – Santiclo was one of the guards in the prison. He is nicer than the other guards and sneaks items in for the girls like Maria Teresa’s journal. He cares about the girls and tries to help them while they are in jail.
o Nelson – Patria’s son. He is part of the revolution even though that his mother does not want him to.
o Captain Pena - He likes being in power. However, he gives Patria, Dede, and Mama passes to go see their loved ones in prison.
o Jaimito – Dede’s husband. He refused to get involved in the revolution because he was concerned about what would happen to his family. He is very possessive, physical, and controlling over Dede. He tells Dede what to do and she usually listens, not wanting to upset him.
